Barocci Drawings: White chalk

White chalk is a calcium-based mineral. It is a dry drawing medium and was used by tailors and artists mainly to draw on coloured textiles or papers. It was often used by Barocci on a coloured support to explore light effects. This medium can easily be removed by rubbing or abrasion and it is possible that its presence on today’s Old Master drawings is much less evident than it would originally have been.
