Home | Exhibitions | Barocci: A lesson in drawing | Barocci Drawings: MediaBoth these terms describe the application of a transparent paint achieved by mixing pigments with an aqueous binding medium. The transparent appearance of these techniques is due to the high proportion of water used either to dissolve the colour or dilute the paint. When the effect is opaque this method is termed bodycolour or gouache. Italian artists used these practices to increase the range of tonalities in certain areas of the drawing or to underline shadows and the modelling of figures.
