Home | Exhibitions | Barocci: A lesson in drawing | Barocci Drawings: MediaRed chalk is a pigment made from red earth and clay. Probably the first artists who largely employed this medium in Italy were Leonardo, Michelangelo and Raphael before its use spread throughout the16th century. The compact quality of this material is a good compromise between charcoal and black chalk making it ideal for small-scale drawings and details such as eyelids and other crucial facial features.
