Home | Exhibitions | Barocci: A lesson in drawing | Barocci Drawings: MediaUnderstanding the use of light, shadow and volume could often prove a frequent struggle for artists. White heightening was usually used in preparatory drawings for this specific purpose. Mainly inserted at the end of the drawing process, this technique enabled the artist to clearly indicate areas of high relief. Together with white chalk, lead white mixed with binding media was often the main material used to render these sections. Lead white can be distinguished from white chalk due to its opacity.
